Category: Science

I used to be a scientist, but I had to give it up. The signs had been sent and only a fool ignores three in a row. No matter, I was still trained as a scientist and appreciate science both for its accomplishments and for its frailties. Here I keep references to science that interests me, perhaps it gives me a story idea, or is something I’ve already used. This is where I comment upon it.

freshphotons: “Mark Vogelsberger, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, and his colleagues created a model of the Universe that follows the evolution of both visible and dark matter starting just 12 million years after the Big Bang. While previous models have either been small and detailed or large and coarse, this simulation covers a region of space big enough to be representative of the whole Universe — a cube 106.5 megaparsecs (350 million light years) across — but is detailed enough to resolve small-scale structures, such as individual galaxies....

Now a Northwestern University research team is the first to build near-perfect single crystals out of nanoparticles and DNA, using the same structure favored by nature. “Single crystals are the backbone of many things we rely on — diamonds for beauty as well as industrial applications, sapphires for lasers and silicon for electronics,” said nanoscientist Chad A....

thenewenlightenmentage: Neutrino Detector Finds Elusive Extraterrestrial Particles in ‘Major Breakthrough’ For decades, scientists have been searching for ghostly neutrino particles from outer space, and now they have finally found them. Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica, researchers found the first evidence of neutrinos from outside the solar system since 1987. The findings open the door for a new era of astronomy that could reveal secrets of the strangest phenomena in the universe, scientists say....
