  • Seven Sisters secrets to be uncovered before cliffs tumble into the sea

archaeologicalnews: The secrets of the cliffs at Seven Sisters are set to be uncovered by archaeologists who believe the site could be on the of UK’s most important prehistoric monuments.  The hilltop enclosure at Belle Tout is an ‘archaeological mystery’ – according to the National Trust, whose archaeologists will be starting a dig next month (September) to uncover the secrets before the cliffs erode into the sea.  They hope to find evidence of an early Bronze Age settlement....

science-junkie: Making a Gem of a Tiny Crystal Nature builds flawless diamonds, sapphires and other gems. Now a Northwestern University research team is the first to build near-perfect single crystals out of nanoparticles and DNA, using the same structure favored by nature. “Single crystals are the backbone of many things we rely on — diamonds for beauty as well as industrial applications, sapphires for lasers and silicon for electronics,” said nanoscientist Chad A....

sci-universe: An untethered miniature origami robot that self-folds, walks, swims, and degrades has been created by a team of the department of informatics, Technische Universitat in Germany and the computer science and artificial intelligence lab at MIT! Unfolded, the robot has a magnet and PVC sandwiched between laser-cut structural layers (polystyrene or paper). When placed on a heating element, the PVC contracts, and where the structural layers have been cut, it creates folds – so this is how the origami part works....

  • Save Firefox: The W3C’s plan for worldwide DRM would have killed Mozilla before it could start

mostlysignssomeportents: The World Wide Web Consortium has been co-opted into standardizing a DRM scheme for letting entertainment companies control your browser; what’s more, they’ve rejected even basic safeguards for competition, changing the browser landscape in a way that threatens the kind of disruptive innovation that gave us the Mozilla project and the Firefox browser. This system, “Encrypted Media Extensions” (EME) uses standards-defined code to funnel video into a proprietary container called a “Content Decryption Module.” For a new browser to support this new video streaming standard – which major studios and cable operators are pushing for – it would have to convince those entertainment companies or one of their partners to let them have a CDM, or this part of the “open” Web would not display in their new browser....
